A few snapshots I've taken for local dailies.
Jeaneane Simmons and Diana Sonntag, both of Lufkin, wave at passing cars on Tuesday morning from the overpass at Tulane Drive. The two women were part of an "Overpasses for Obama's Impeachment Rally," a nationwide protest calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama. The Lufkin Daily News
Firefighters extinguished flames from a truck after it caught fire this morning at Atkinson Drive outside of Loop 287. The couple in the 1980 truck were driving toward the loop when they noticed smoke from the engine that burst into flames when they opened the hood, Lufkin police patrolman John Davis said. No one was injured. “It’s a 33-year-old truck,” Davis said. “It could have been anything.”

Fifty years ago, Greater Love Tabernacle, then known as Homer United Pentecostal Church, opened its doors in a modified three-bedroom farmhouse with the Rev. E.K. Quarles at its helm. Two years later, Quarles bought three acres of land off FM 326 to build a new church and then in 1972, a tornado blew through the area, tearing down the church. “But we rebuilt,” Quarles, 87, said, “and over the years, if we needed it, we built it.”

Nathaniel Gardner, of Lufkin First Assembly, cleans the windshield of a car at the church’s Gas Buy Down today at the Chevron on 904 S. John Redditt Drive. As part of an outreach to the community, the church offered to “buy down” gas for 400 cars, bringing the price per gallon to $2.49.
